The Mississippi Department of Education has selected three Harrison County School District teachers to serve on the Mississippi Teacher Council. All three teachers are from Bel-Aire Elementary School.
Jenny Anderson and Sharon Taylor are both second grade teachers at Bel-Aire. Sixth-grade teacher Ashleigh Syverson, who was chosen last year, has been asked to continue serving on the Council this year.
The teachers had to submit an application, resume, and letter of recommendation to MDE. They say it is an honor to be selected to serve on this prestigious Council and they believe this opportunity will give them a voice on issues affecting education on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

In a letter to the teachers, state Education Superintendent Dr. Carey Wright wrote: “The purpose of this Council is to hear directly from teachers on a regular basis, regarding any and all issues facing them. I want you to provide feedback to me on the initiatives of the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) and the Mississippi State Board of Education (SBE) and I encourage you to discuss topics critical to your success in the classroom and how MDE can assist.”
"As a former classroom teacher, I have a profound respect and admiration for what you do each day for every child. I am keenly aware of the challenges you face in your communities and schools, and I want to ensure that the MDE is responsive to your needs. I thank you for your willingness to serve on the Council and to represent your students and your profession. I look forward to working collaboratively with you to educate our students.
